Post President's Corner

Hello everyone!

I’m writing this the day after watching the screening of “Tidewater”, graciously hosted by Old Dominion University in their campus theater. I left thinking “wow” and “what a great chance for SAME Hampton Roads, SAME Peninsula Post, and the SeaWall Coalition to partner for an event.” I’d like to thank Colonel (ret) Paul Olsen for moderating and Rear Admiral (ret) Kevin Slates, Rear Admiral (ret) Ann Phillips, and Ms. Christine Morris for their time and expertise on the discussion panel. It was fantastic! In case you missed it, the SeaWall Coalition has more information regarding sea level rise at their website, www.seawallcoalition.org.

Upcoming, we have our regular February lunch on February 21st at 1130 at the Westin. Mr. Frank Miyagawa, PE, CEM, PMP is presenting on “Planning and Design of Mico Grids on DOD Installations”. I personally recently experienced a need for a microgrid for units affected by Hurricane Maria, so I’m very interested in Frank’s information Our Small Business Conference is on for 21-22 March at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott. Registration begins at 1100 on the 21st and we kickoff at 1 pm. We changed it from 2 full days to 1 ½ days based on feedback from last year; I hope you’re able to attend as we have a large number of businesses and government already lined up, and we’re still a month and a half out!

Scholarships: the scholarship program we have for talented people majoring in STEM and STEM-related fields is one of the high points of the SAME HR Post. We will have the scholarship information posted to our website by mid-month and available at the February meeting, but the deadline is April 30, 2018 for school year 2018-2019 scholarships.

Finally, I’d like to openly ask for help in growing our ranks. SAME HR has a great constituent and volunteer base, but we are sorely lacking in Young Member and Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) participation. Please help me by grabbing NCOs and potential young members and bringing them to a lunch. I strongly believe in the value proposition of SAME, but they have to be there to give it a chance.

Have a great day, and thank you for your support and commitment to SAME and our goals.

Pat

Intern Position

Commonwealth Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Industry Internship Program.

With an increasing demand for skilled STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) workers in Virginia, the development of efficient pathways between undergraduate students pursuing STEM degrees and industry has become an urgent need. With support from the Commonwealth of Virginia, Virginia Space Grant Consortium (VSGC) in partnership with Virginia’s Regional Technology Councils, and in collaboration with Virginia companies, Virginia colleges, and community colleges, has created the Commonwealth STEM Industry Internship Program (CSIIP). CSIIP links undergraduate STEM students to paid summer internship positions with companies throughout Virginia.

CSIIP offers a one-stop, centralized, online internship application system that provides Virginia’s undergraduate STEM majors the ability to search and apply for STEM-related (summer/fall/spring) paid internship opportunities with participating Virginia-based companies that can search our database of prescreened student applications for specific skills, experience, educational background, interests and desired work locations to find the best possible candidates for their paid summer internships. Companies select students, make offers, and employ interns directly.
